“GRADE A” SHEA BUTTER
This grade A shea butter comes from Africa from the Shea Tree or Karite Tree meaning Tree of Life. It comes from the seed of the tree.
Shea Butter is an all-natural, vitamin A cream which is a superb moisturiser with exceptional healing properties for the skin. The moisture in Shea are the same of that produced by our bodies own sebaceous glands which are moisture promoters.
Some of the benefits and uses of Shea are:- wound healing, shaving cream for sensitive skin, cold weather moisturiser as a protector for harsh climates, dry skin, wrinkles, rashes, itching, sunburn, blemishes, dermatitis, eczema.
All Shea Butters are not created equal:- “Grade A Unrefined” Shea butter means it is extracted and prepared without the use of harsh chemicals or preservatives. That means it is produced the same way African people have been doing for centuries. This really matters, because only “unrefined” Shea butter keeps all of its’ healing properties.
“Refined” Shea butter has been extracted with hexane or other petroleum solvents with preservatives added. The sad fact is that the healing properties are diminished or completely removed during this process.
To cut it short, differences between “unrefined” and “refined” Shea butter are the scent, colour and benefits. “Unrefined” Shea butter maintains its nutty scent, beige colour and its healing properties. Refined Shea butter has been chemically altered to remove the Shea butter’s natural scent, is bleached white in colour and retains only a small portion of its natural healing properties, if any.
The end result of refinement is an odourless, white butter that may be aesthetically appealing, but lacks the true moisturising, healing and nutritive properties of true Shea Butter.
Shea Butter is classed into five grades:-
Grade A is raw or unrefined, extracted with water
Grade B is refined
Grade C is highly refined and extracted with solvents such as hexane
Grade D is the lowest uncontaminated
Grade E with contaminants
Grade A “unrefined” Shea Butter retains the most natural vitamins, especially Vitamin A and E, which are lost in the other grades.
